The steel pan offers musicians an exceptional opportunity to achieve a high level of performance capability in a relatively short period of time. It has greater accessibility than most contemporary band instruments as the playing technique (two mallets for each player) is straightforward and easy to learn, but at the same time the ensemble structure allows students to directly experience essential components of music such as harmony, rhythm and timing, chordal structures, song organization and successful interactions between each individual and the group. Teaching methodologies are very diversified and employ ear training, learning by rote imitation, focused listening, memory exercises and various forms of visual prompts in the form of written notation.
